Rather than relying on assumptions, you can clearly see how tones reproduce in print — from deep shadows to delicate highlights.
After printing the step wedge, you can carefully examine each patch, paying close attention to the separation between adjacent tones. The goal is to ensure smooth tonal transitions without clumping, particularly in the shadow regions and highlight areas where detail is often lost.

The black and white print test target has been designed to print onto A4 and US letter-sized paper. Treat the test target as you would a normal photograph, and print it in exactly the same way.
After allowing dry downtime, under good lighting, examine the target looking for any inconsistencies especially in the smoothness of the tones as we go from black to white.
