In April 2018, Adobe released a new version of Lightroom and Camera Raw with a new update to the Camera Raw and Lightroom Profiles feature which they now refer to as Creative Profiles.
Updated Lightroom & Camera RAW Profiles
They have made the Profiles more discoverable by changing how you access them. In both Lightroom Classic CC and Adobe Camera Raw, the profiles have been moved from the Camera Calibration panel to the Basic panel and they are now adding them into Lightroom CC (on Macintosh, Windows, iOS, Android, and ChromeOS) at the top of the edit panel.
All the way back to version 3, Lightroom has offered a number of profiles to emulate different in-camera picture styles, but they have always resided in the Camera Calibration panel so many people didn’t know they existed. In the April 2018 Lightroom releases, these profiles have been moved to the top of the Develop panel.
Profiles are designed to be selected before you start work on editing the photograph. You can select a different profile at any time, and your slider values will remain untouched, but the look of the photo may change considerably, so it’s more efficient to select your profile before you start editing.
Lightroom Profiles Or Presets
Maybe you’re wondering what’s the difference between Lightroom Presets and Creative Profiles. Lightroom presets and profiles can be used together if this fits your workflow. Lightroom Presets are an option if you’re looking to apply a certain effect or style and then adjust to you’re liking. Creative Profiles don’t replace presets.
Think of Creative Profiles as a one click profile which can be applied to your photograph in both Lightroom or ACR, and you can then adjust the strength of the profile. The new Creative Profiles now allow us to use LUTs (Loop Up Tables) to create profiles, which really opens the door creatively!
The Lightroom Profiles Have A New Home
On a Mac, the Profiles now live in:
[User Name]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Camera Raw/Settings
If the ~/Library folder doesn’t appear for you, you can make it visible or easily access it by following the steps in this help article from Adobe.
On Windows, the Profiles now live in:
Lightroom Creative Profiles Automatic Installation
The Adobe Lightroom and Camera RAW creative profiles which are available in our online store all come with an easy automatic installation setup program which will put all the creative profiles into the correct location on your computer. We have two versions available, one for Windows and one for Mac.
